Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Zoom Lens
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens has been developed to meet the high-performance standards that today's photographers demand. Improved Image Stabilizer Technology provides up to three stops of "shake" correction, and the "Mode 2" option stabilizes images while panning with a moving subject. Compared to the original Canon EF 75-300mm IS zoom lens, this telephoto lens has faster autofocus, and overall the lens is lighter and has a smaller diameter than the original. The zoom ring can be locked at the 70mm position, making this powerful lens easy to transport, too.
The powerful yet reasonably priced EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM will appeal to nature and sports photographers looking to achieve sharper images when shooting handheld. Focal length translates to approx. 112-480mm equivalent in 35mm film format when fitted to cameras with APS-C-sized sensors, such as the EOS 30D, 20D, Digital Rebel XT and Digital Rebel.

Key Features of the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Zoom Lens
- Canon's 3-Stop Image Stabilizer
- Canon has developed a series of truly unique lenses equipped with an Image Stabilizer (IS) function that let you capture photos that would otherwise be blurred due to camera movement, greatly expanding the range of handheld-camera photography. In many shooting situations where photographers are not allowed to use a tripod or flash, such as art museums and concert halls, Canon IS lenses are your ticket to sharper pictures.
Blurred pictures due to camera shake become more of a problem when taking pictures in dim light - at dusk, indoors, on a cloudy day. And the chance of getting blurred pictures is greater when using longer focal length lenses that magnify the image and any associated movement. To overcome these problems, Canon developed the world's first SLR lens with a built-in image stabilizer. Electronic signals emitted by vibration-detecting gyro sensors are used to move the image-stabilizing lens group in parallel along the optical axis, providing clear picture quality at all times.
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM features Canon's 3-stop Image Stabilizer (IS). Ideal for handheld photography, Canon's Image Stabilizer allows photographers to use shutter speeds up to 3-stops slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. For stabilized panning, IS Mode 2 only corrects for unwanted vertical shake by switching off IS in the horizontal direction. IS is ideal for low light conditions, fast paced scenes and for shooting from moving vehicles. IS switches off automatically when the camera is mounted on a tripod.
- One Ultra-Low Dispersion UD Glass Lens Element
- The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is a professional zoom lens with high contrast and high resolving power. It is constructed using the finest optics including one UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) glass element designed to correct chromatic aberrations, resulting in extremely sharp images with excellent color rendition. A UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass lens element corrects chromatic aberration to achieve high resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range without color fringing on subject outlines.
- Ultrasonic Motor
- Powered by Canon's exclusive Ultrasonic (USM) motor for autofocusing, the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens' micro USM motor uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive rapid auto-focus with near-silent operation. Good holding torque ensures there is no overshoot. A high speed CPU and optimised AF algorithm contribute to AF speed literally faster than the human eye.
- Circular Aperture
- This Canon lens features a circular apertures diapragm unit, which uses curved aperture blades to provide for a more rounded opening as the lens is stopped down. It's especially effective at rendering out-of-focus background highlights as natural rounded shapes. Offers a more pleasing out-of-focus image.
- EF Lens Mount
- In designing the EF lens mount, Canon engineers gave photographers a lot more than simply a way to quickly attach an interchangeable lens to a camera body. With the elimination of mechanical connections and the incorporation of an electronic interface between the camera and lens, Canon cameras have greater flexibility with regard to incorporating future technologies and future system upgrades. This fact has already been proven with a vast increase in AF speed, increased functionality such as predictive autofocus systems found in EOS cameras, auto-aperture tilt-shift (TS-E) lenses, the use of ultrasonic motors and the development of the Image Stabilizer lens.
