Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Zoom Lens
A spectacular professional lens, combining the virtues of the legendary EF 70-200 f/2.8L with the Canon's newest Image Stabilization technology. The IS system now offers up to a three-stop improvement in hand-held ability, responds faster than ever before, and functions on a solid tripod. Additional improvements include faster AF response and tracking speed, weather-resistant construction, and the entirely new optical system focuses even closer (to 4.6 feet/1.4m) than the non-IS version.
Canon continues to provide professional photographers and serious amateurs with the highest quality products with the introduction of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Image Stabilizing lens for the company's market-leading line of EOS autofocus SLRs. The optical system of the new lens is based on the current EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM and retains the same outstanding level of image quality, while adding a new high-performance Image Stabilizer function. In addition, the new lens also incorporates an improved high-performance vibration gyro sensor for maintaining the lens' compact design, moisture- and dust-resistant construction in critical areas for greater performance in adverse shooting conditions, and several other significant improvements compared to the original EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM.
Other improvements include a reduced minimum focusing distance of 1.4m/4.6 ft., a newly developed aperture diaphragm that remains virtually circular from f/2.8 to f/5.6 for enhanced image quality, and a revised AF drive circuit and autofocusing algorithm for superior AF speed when used with current high-end EOS SLRs.

Key Features of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Zoom Lens
- Second Generation Image Stabilization Technology
- Canon has developed a series of truly unique lenses equipped with an Image Stabilizer (IS) function that let you capture photos that would otherwise be blurred due to camera movement, greatly expanding the range of handheld-camera photography. In many shooting situations where photographers are not allowed to use a tripod or flash, such as art museums and concert halls, Canon IS lenses are your ticket to sharper pictures.
Blurred pictures due to camera shake become more of a problem when taking pictures in dim light - at dusk, indoors, on a cloudy day. And the chance of getting blurred pictures is greater when using longer focal length lenses that magnify the image and any associated movement. To overcome these problems, Canon developed the world's first SLR lens with a built-in image stabilizer. Electronic signals emitted by vibration-detecting gyro sensors are used to move the image-stabilizing lens group in parallel along the optical axis, providing clear picture quality at all times. Actual shooting tests result in improvement equivalent to using a shutter speed two steps faster.
The EF 70-200mm f-2.8L IS USM lens employs a newly designed Image Stabilizer mechanism that uses an improved method of holding the barrel of the supplementary optical system, providing smoother movement than in previous IS systems. This results in image stabilization up to approximately 3 stops compared to the 2-stop stabilization effect of previous Canon IS lenses. Additionally, the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM's Image Stabilizer function can be used to eliminate the image-blurring effects of mirror bounce even when the lens is used on a tripod or monopod.
- Ultra-Low Dispersion UD Glass
- The new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM is a professional telephoto zoom lens with high contrast and high resolving power. It is constructed using the finest optics including four UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) glass elements designed to correct chromatic aberrations, resulting in extremely sharp images with excellent color rendition.
- Ultrasonic Motor
- Powered by Canon's exclusive Ultrasonic (USM) motor for autofocusing, the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM is silent in operation and very quick to focus, even in low-light conditions. There is virtually no whining noise as the lens focuses to distract the subject or draw attention to the photographer. Most important for the photographer in the field, the motor draws minimal power so the camera batteries last longer.
- EF Lens Mount
- In designing the EF lens mount, Canon engineers gave photographers a lot more than simply a way to quickly attach an interchangeable lens to a camera body. With the elimination of mechanical connections and the incorporation of an electronic interface between the camera and lens, Canon cameras have greater flexibility with regard to incorporating future technologies and future system upgrades. This fact has already been proven with a vast increase in AF speed, increased functionality such as predictive autofocus systems found in EOS cameras, auto-aperture tilt-shift (TS-E) lenses, the use of ultrasonic motors and the development of the Image Stabilizer lens.
The fully electronic mount system has none of the shock, operational noise, abrasion, play, lubrication requirements, slow response, diminished precision caused by lever operation, or design restrictions related to linkage mechanisms used to transfer data. Furthermore, operation and reliability are significantly improved. And, a lens operation self-test system, using the lens' built-in microcomputer, can even warn of malfunctions through the camera's LCD readout to help ensure high reliability.
- Full-Time Manual Focus
- Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor allows manual focusing without switching out of the auto mode, making this lens ideal for many photographic applications including sports, photojournalism, portraits, and landscapes.
- Consistent Aperture Ratio of f/2.8 Throughout The Zoom Range
- Designed to maintain a consistent aperture ratio of f/2.8 throughout the zoom range, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens provides photographers with tremendous shooting flexibility. This feature makes it the optimum choice for location and sports photographers who need an assortment of fast lenses but can not afford to weigh themselves down with excessive gear.
- 8-Blade Circular Aperture
- The EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens uses a new electromagnetically controlled automatic diaphragm designed to maintain nearly circular apertures between f/2.8 and f/5.6. A circular aperture makes blurred points of light appear round and makes the background blur more prominent for greater effect. Offers a more pleasing out-of-focus image.
- Dust- and Water-Resistant Construction
- This EF lens is highly dust- and water-resistant and can therefore be used in harsh conditions without dust and water getting inside.
