Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Zoom Lens
This compact and lightweight zoom lens is being reintroduced as a telephoto zoom lens for the new EOS Digital Rebel (equivalent to approx. 90-320mm) and other digital SLRs. It's been updated with new optical coatings to reduce internal reflections when used with digital bodies, too. This is a true EF mount lens, so it's fully compatible even with full-frame digital bodies and 35mm SLR cameras as well.
Super-compact and light, this lens is compatible with all EOS cameras and ideal for digital SLRs -- when used on the EOS Digital Rebel, it's equivalent to an approx. 90-320mm lens. The 13-element design's new optical coatings are optimized for digital cameras. It focuses down to under 4 feet (1.2m), and its Micro USM-powered AF is faster than ever, due to new electronics within the lens.

Key Features of the Canon EF 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM Zoom Lens
- Designed for Digital
- Same optics as previous EF 55-200mm zoom lens, but new lens coatings to reduce internal reflections when used with digital SLRs.
- Superior Optics
- Thirteen element design, with front-group focusing.
- Revised Electronics
- Newly-revised lens CPU and electronics for significantly faster AF with new bodies.
- New Exterior Design
- New exterior design with ribbed zoom ring and ultra-compact manual focus ring.
- Close-Focusing
- Close-focusing to 3.9 feet - fill the frame with a subject the size of a postcard.
- Circular Aperture
- This Canon lens features a new circular apertures diapragm unit, which uses curved aperture blades to provide for a more rounded opening as the lens is stopped down. It's especially effective at rendering out-of-focus background highlights as natural rounded shapes. Offers a more pleasing out-of-focus image.
- Ultrasonic Motor
- Powered by Canon's exclusive Ultrasonic (USM) motor for autofocusing, the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM is silent in operation and very quick to focus, even in low-light conditions. There is virtually no whining noise as the lens focuses to distract the subject or draw attention to the photographer. Most important for the photographer in the field, the motor draws minimal power so the camera batteries last longer.
- EF Lens Mount
- In designing the EF lens mount, Canon engineers gave photographers a lot more than simply a way to quickly attach an interchangeable lens to a camera body. With the elimination of mechanical connections and the incorporation of an electronic interface between the camera and lens, Canon cameras have greater flexibility with regard to incorporating future technologies and future system upgrades. This fact has already been proven with a vast increase in AF speed, increased functionality such as predictive autofocus systems found in EOS cameras, auto-aperture tilt-shift (TS-E) lenses, the use of ultrasonic motors and the development of the Image Stabilizer lens.
The fully electronic mount system has none of the shock, operational noise, abrasion, play, lubrication requirements, slow response, diminished precision caused by lever operation, or design restrictions related to linkage mechanisms used to transfer data. Furthermore, operation and reliability are significantly improved. And, a lens operation self-test system, using the lens' built-in microcomputer, can even warn of malfunctions through the camera's LCD readout to help ensure high reliability.
