Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer |
- Genuine Canon Optics - 10x High Definition Video Lens
- With more than 70 years of expertise in manufacturing lenses for professional broadcast and still photography, the Canon name represents optical excellence. The HV40 features a Genuine Canon 10x HD Video Zoom Lens designed specifically to capture crisp high definition video. It incorporates an aspherical lens, super spectra coating technology and a new gradation ND filter design to ensure stunning image quality, while minimizing aberration. A built-in electronic lens cover puts a sleek end to dangling lens caps.
- Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer
- Canon's Super-Range Optical Image Stabilizer helps deliver smooth, steady video, even at longer focal lengths. The system uses two detection methods (gyro and vector) to sense the widest range of vibrations from hand-held shake, to vibration from a moving vehicle. By using optical stabilization, it can compensate for a greater degree of camera shake and avoid any loss in image quality, unlike electronic image stabilizers. It is even effective for both video and photos.
- Variable Zoom Speed Control
- A sure sign of amateur video is the unsteady zoom shot. But with the Vixia HV40's zoom control, you simply select one of three pre-set zoom speeds for smooth, steady, professional looking zooms.

CMOS Sensor |
- Canon True HD CMOS Sensor (1920 x 1080)
- Canon's expertise in designing and manufacturing CMOS image sensors for its line of EOS Digital SLR cameras is now available in the Canon HV40 HDV camcorder. The 2.96 Megapixel CMOS sensor captures true HD information at 1920 x 1080, giving your images the ultimate in realistic detail. Canon's advanced noise reduction technology, ensures the purity of each pixel even in dim light, minimizing noise and other aberrations. It incorporates an RGB Primary Color Filter with Bayer placement to deliver a sharp HD image with vibrant and accurate color reproduction.
- RGB Primary Color Filter
- The HV40's True HD CMOS Sensor's RGB Primary Color Filter separates the light passing through the lens into individual red, green, and blue color components, the same color filtration used in professional 3 CCD camcorders. As a result, the HV40 deliver richer, more vibrant, and more accurate color reproduction than models using a conventional complementary color filter.
- Instant AF
- Since achieving sharp focus is critical when shooting in High Definition, the HV40 features Canon's revolutionary Instant AF focusing system. It offers a dramatic improvement in auto focus speed and accuracy (compared to traditional autofocus systems). Instant AF uses an external sensor, in combination with Canon's autofocus system, to help significantly decrease the time it takes to find focus. It is especially effective when shooting at night, in high-brightness conditions or when following a moving subject.

DIGIC DV II Image Processor |
- DIGIC DV II Image Processor
- The HV40 features DIGIC DV II, Canon's proprietary image processor, designed specifically for HD video and photos. DIGIC DV II provides highly accurate color and tonal reproduction needed for exceptional HD image quality. A new noise reduction system, combined with a new gamma system, helps to reduce noise in monotone and shadow areas. The fast processing speed of the DIGIC DV II chip allows video and photos to be shot simultaneously. Furthermore, the processor lowers power consumption, providing longer battery life.
- Convenient HDMI Terminal
- The HV40 allows easy connection to today's latest HD televisions through its HDMI Terminal. Only one cable is needed to output a pure digital signal (video and audio) for the ultimate viewing experience.
- 24p Cinema Mode
- 24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional film-like look. You can change the camcorder's frame rate to 24p, which provides the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, you can use the HV40's CINE setting, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evoking the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together, or independently.
- 30p Progressive Mode
- This is a unique feature that only Canon offers in the consumer camcorder market. You would otherwise have to look to professional video cameras in order to have this sophisticated tool at your command. In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the Vixia HV40 to capture video in 30p which is (30 progressive frames) particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. In addition, this setting gives enhanced quality to still images captured after recording. Excellent for action shots and sports.
- Multi-Angle Vivid 2.7" Widescreen LCD Screen and Widescreen Color Viewfinder
- The bright 2.7" LCD viewscreen makes it easy to compose sensational shots without having to squint into the viewfinder. You can rotate the screen for high-or low-angle shots, or turn it around 180º to record yourself. When you're done shooting, the screen is perfect for reviewing your scenes. Using a hard coat AR surface and improved color reproduction, the scene in the Multi-Angle Vivid LCD is more accurate to what you're capturing in the camcorder. An added benefit of this Canon Exclusive is the wider range of viewing angle possible with this new LCD screen. With less glare and deeper contrasts, groups of people can gather around it and see the image displayed more clearly than ever before.
- Level and Grid Markers
- With the Level Marker feature, it's easy to keep your camera level for more professional looking video. Line up any horizontal lines in your shot -- such as the horizon -- to the marker and you can be sure your camcorder is level. The Vixia HV40's Grid Marker feature lets you compose your shot accurately, according to the grid in your viewfinder. You can even choose from two different colors for the grid. This ensures that you see the grid, no matter what the background color of your shot.
- Built-in Mini Video Light
- Some of the most magical shots are taken at the end of the day or long after the sun has set. You won't miss any of them, thanks to the Vixia HV40's bright Mini Video Light. The light lets you shoot subjects in color in low light up to 4.9 feet away. So, whether it's a shot of a sleeping baby, or a dramatic skyline at night, the Vixia HV40 captures all the moments you want to record.
- 2.76 Megapixel Still Image Capture
- The same Canon Exclusive 2.96 Megapixel Full HD CMOS image sensor that ensures sharp, vivid HD video also gives you brilliant digital photographs. Like the CMOS image sensors in Canon's EOS Series digital SLR cameras, the Vixia HV40's image sensor results in outstanding digital photographs. It gives an impressive resolution of 1920 x 1440 for sharp, crisp still images.
- miniSD Memory Card Compatible
- The Vixia HV40 makes it easy to store digital photos on an optional miniSD Memory Card. Popularly used in today's cell phones and half the size of a standard SD card, the miniSD Card offers the benefit of high-capacity storage in a very small size.
- 9 Point AiAF (Auto Intelligent Auto Focus)
- The sophisticated autofocus system lets you put your subject almost anywhere in the frame. The intelligent AiAF system reads information from 9 separate points. This makes it possible to frame shots without being constrained by the subject's position.
- Focus Assist
- Because a properly focused subject is more critical than ever with HD, the Vixia HV40 also features Focus Assist. This helps in capturing your subject in razor sharp focus.
- Simultaneous Photo Shooting
- Don't let a great photo opportunity pass you by -- even while you're shooting video. The HV40 allows Simultaneous Photo Shooting. Simply press the photo button to capture a 2.0 megapixel (1920 x 1080) photo to a memory card with no interruption to your video. You can even capture photos from tape during playback.
- Histogram Display
- For the advanced digital photographer, the Vixia HV40 comes with a Histogram Display -- a feature found in Canon's line of digital SLR cameras. The display allows you to see the brightness information of your still images, so you can adjust your exposures as you shoot.
- Auto Exposure Modes Including Aperture and Shutter Priority
- Like any good digital still camera, the HV40 lets you choose from a range of exposure modes. Auto mode automatically sets the exposure, letting you concentrate on your subject. AV (aperture priority) mode lets you control depth of field by letting you choose the aperture. TV (shutter priority) mode lets you select the shutter speed for sharp, action shots. In P (program) mode, the camcorder adjusts camera settings automatically.
- 8 Special Scene Modes
- Your life happens everywhere, so the HV40 gives you settings that automatically result in the best exposure settings for different conditions and different subjects:
- Portrait - The camera sets a large aperture, focuses the subject and artistically blurs the background to make your subject "pop".
- Sports - Ensures highly accurate autofocusing when shooting fast-moving subjects for capturing beautiful action shots.
- Night - Capture people against a softly glowing night background without a tripod.
- Snow - Shoot clear snow scenes without darkened subjects and bluish tint.
- Beach - Get clear shots of people at a sunny beach without darkened faces.

- Still Capture from Tape
- The versatile Vixia HV40 even lets you capture a still image from an already recorded movie.
